01 THE PROBLEM

01 THE PROBLEM

Most people don't have a shopping problem. They have a styling problem.

Most people don't have a shopping problem. They have a styling problem.

In an era of wardrobe guilt and fast-fashion fatigue, the insight wasn't that people needed more clothes. They didn't know what to do with the ones they already owned. Styling intelligence was locked behind stylists, algorithms built to sell, or friends who happened to have good taste.

Conversations that shaped every decision

Conversations that shaped every decision

I conducted informal interviews with four participants across different cities, lifestyles, and wardrobe sizes. The question wasn't "what do you wish you owned?". It was "What happens the morning of an event you don't know how to dress for?"

The Routine Trap

People build wardrobe habits around daily contexts. Anything outside that routine creates a gap they don't know how to fill.

03 THE CRITICAL CONSTRAINT

The onboarding tax almost killed the product before it started

The onboarding tax almost killed the product before it started

Early alpha testing revealed a fatal pattern: users loved the concept but abandoned before experiencing a single outfit suggestion. Photographing and uploading an entire wardrobe required 15+ minutes of work before any value was delivered.

The solution was a structural reframe.

Demo Mode

Demo Mode

New users interact with a pre-loaded Starter Capsule wardrobe the moment they open the app. They experience a complete, AI-generated outfit suggestion within 30 seconds of download — before creating an account, before uploading a single photo.

The biggest challenge wasn't the design. It was the AI prompt engineering.

The biggest challenge wasn't the design. It was the AI prompt engineering.

Getting Claude to recommend outfits that were actually wearable, and not just algorithmically plausible. This required building a Fashion Rules layer, outfit validation logic, and a "Basics + Wow Moment" philosophy into every prompt. Early suggestions were technically complete but stylistically flat.

The biggest quality unlock was Vision Mode: sending actual clothing photos to the AI instead of text descriptions. Once the model could see fabric, cut, and silhouette, recommendations shifted from generic to genuinely styled.

What I'd do next

What I'd do next

  1. Camera-based closet detection

Even with Demo Mode, uploading an entire wardrobe remains the biggest drop-off point. The next frontier is pointing your phone camera or AR glasses at your closet and having Styliner automatically detect, identify, and catalog every item. This can collapse onboarding from "upload 30 photos" to "scan your closet once."

  1. Cost-per-wear Tracking

The most resonant insight from testing: users felt guilt about clothes they owned but never wore. Cost-per-wear tracking would turn every outfit into a small financial win, which can make the closet feel like an investment portfolio. This creates the strongest possible daily hook.
